Glossary (F-J)

F

FALG: Frostproof Art League & Gallery, a CAB member organization.  They are listed under "Visual & Performing Arts" on our web site.

FDT: Florida Dance Theatre, a CAB member organization.  Founder Carol Erckes.  It is Polk's only professional Dance Theatre.  They are listed under "Dance" on our web site.

FSC: Florida Southern College, a CAB member organization.  Home to the world's largest built collection of Frank Lloyd Wright structures, and the Melvin Fine Art Gallery.  They are located on picturesque Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, FL. They are listed on our web site under, "Arts & Education" and "Visual & Performing Arts."

Figurative: artwork that portrays, in a realistic or abstract manner, something seen in the visible world, most often the human form.

First Edition: A first edition is the first press run of a book.  They can be paperbacks as well as hardbacks.

Formalism: the analysis of a work of art based on the elements and principles of design (color, line, texture) rather than its narrative or historical characteristics.

Gallery: a space where works are exhibited. Some museums do not sell the art they exhibit, some do. 

Gestural: a term used to describe any record of the artist's physical movements.  Pronounced brushstrokes may be described as "gestural."

Graphic Arts: the crafts, industries and professions related to designing and printing on paper and other substrates.

 


H

Historic Bok Sanctuary located in Lake Wales, FL.

Hours of Operation: the times that are available for public visitation or use. 

Hue: property of color that refers to the intrinsic “color” of a color. Distinguishing between a color that is more red-orange than red-violet is referencing the property of hue.


I

ISO: Imperial Symphony Orchestra, a CAB member organization. 

They are located under "Music" on our web site. Installation: art that is created specifically for an architectural setting or environment.  Example; Spirit of Volunteerism (see home page) which was created specifically for outdoor space on the Lake Mirror Promenade in Lakeland, FL in 2005.

Instrument: a device used to produce music.


J

Juried Competition: artwork submitted for judging by an organization, agency or other entity for some primary purpose, i.e., outdoor sculpture competition with the Polk Museum of Arts' "Lemon Street Outdoor Sculpture Competition," which is also in Winter Haven in the downtown area.  Often a monetary benefit is awarded to the selectee(s).
